VEGETABLE PARINIRVANA POSTCARD
VEGETABLE PARINIRVANA POSTCARD
A reminder to honor the magical offering of earth’s fruiting and vegetal bodies. All vegetables go to heaven.
Risograph postcard commemorating a performance piece by Rachel Corry from 2007 titled ‘Vegetable Parinirvana’ in which 15 costumed participants paraded up Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park and settled into a Tableaux Vivant for 70 minutes of silent meditation. The work was based on an ink scroll masterwork by the same name painted by Ito Jakuchu in Japan in the undetermined late 1700s. This was an unusual take on a common Buddhist scene of the death and parinirvana, but this time with the characters rendered as vegetables. Jakuchu’s family were produce vendors and his work is likely both pious and humorous.
